Officers Challenge Legality of Compensation Fund

Two police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021, riot have taken legal action. They filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday aiming to halt a substantial fund initiated by the Trump administration. This fund, valued at nearly $1.8 billion, is intended to compensate individuals who allege being victimized by a “weaponized” legal system.

Officers Harry Dunn and Daniel Hodges are spearheading this legal challenge. They argue the fund contravenes federal law and could potentially legitimize political violence. Their legal action marks the first known challenge to this compensation fund.

Both officers, alongside Michael Fanone and Aquilino Gonell, had previously testified before a House panel in 2021 regarding the events of the Capitol riot. Their new legal challenge underscores ongoing tensions and legal battles stemming from those events.
