NextEra Energy, based in Florida, is well-known for its significant political influence. The company’s strategies have often caused friction with regulators, consumer groups, residents, and journalists. With its planned acquisition of Dominion Energy, NextEra aims to become the largest utility in the United States.

The company’s aggressive tactics in Florida are well-documented through public lawsuits and records. A notable case in 2023 involved shareholders suing NextEra in federal court. They claimed that the company’s political engagements jeopardized their investments, which led to a steep decline in its stock value.

The shareholders alleged potential violations of election laws by NextEra or its consultants, possible surveillance of journalists, and questionable methods in attempts to purchase a city-owned utility. The lawsuit also questioned the transparency of the company’s executives regarding these efforts.

NextEra responded by stating that it conducted two investigations regarding the allegations, both of which concluded without findings of illegal activity. The company argued that statements made by its executives were neither intended to deceive nor did they cause financial losses to shareholders.

Although a District Court initially dismissed the lawsuit, a federal appeals court reinstated it in November. Both the shareholders and the company have indicated that they plan to submit a settlement by June 15 for court approval.
