Brandon Clarke, a former NBA player, passed away from a drug overdose at his Los Angeles home on May 11. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner announced that Clarke’s death was accidental, caused by heroin and cocaine. Drug paraphernalia was discovered at the scene. Clarke was 29 years old.

Initially drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019, Clarke’s rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. During his career with the Grizzlies, Clarke quickly showcased his talent. He earned MVP honors at the 2019 NBA Summer League, making him the second non-American to achieve this. Clarke was known for his contributions off the bench throughout his seven years with the team.

The last season was challenging for Clarke due to injuries. He played only two games, facing setbacks from knee surgery and a subsequent calf strain. These injuries limited his participation significantly. Memphis announced in March that while Clarke was rehabbing, his injuries required more recovery time.

Legal issues also emerged for Clarke. In April, he faced arrest in Arkansas, charged with multiple offenses including improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, and trafficking. A court appearance was scheduled for May 15.

Clarke initially gained attention playing for Gonzaga in college, which led to a promising start with the Grizzlies. His notable season was 2019-20, earning a spot on the All-Rookie team. That year, he averaged 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Throughout his NBA career, Clarke played an average of 20.8 minutes in 309 games, recording 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per contest.
