Navigating Household Disagreements: The Toilet Lid Debate

Dear Carolyn,

A trivial disagreement has become a point of tension in our household. I grew up with the belief that the correct way to leave a toilet after use is with the lid down. My wife shares this upbringing, so it was not a concern at first.

However, the problem arises when my wife’s friends visit. They consistently leave the toilet lid open, which frustrates me. I’ve tried addressing this, but it led to friction between us. My wife feels uncomfortable imposing this preference on her friends.

We’ve discussed this issue several times, yet no consensus has been reached. I feel it’s a matter of respect in our home environment, while she views it as a minor detail not worth discussing with guests. This difference in perspective creates ongoing tension.

We’ve attempted to compromise, but traditional habits and social norms complicate the situation. We wish to maintain harmony in our home while respecting each other’s views.

Seeking advice on how to proceed without making this a contentious subject.
