Nationals Consider Trade Moves Ahead of Deadline

When the Washington Nationals appointed Paul Toboni as their president of baseball operations on October 1, 2025, his initial expectation was to focus on acquiring minor league prospects before his first trade deadline.

Ten months on, Toboni admits his plans for the upcoming August 3 deadline remain uncertain. “I don’t know what we’re going to be thinking a month from now,” he told reporters on June 29.

As of June 29, the Nationals have a record of 43-43. They trail the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins by 2.5 games for the final National League Wild Card spot. For a team forecasted to finish last in its division for the sixth time in seven years, this is a noteworthy achievement.

Balancing optimism with reality is crucial for Toboni. The team’s performance in the coming month could influence his plans. He remains cautious about setting expectations. “We were pretty careful about not setting expectations too high or too low coming in to this,” Toboni remarked.

The Nationals’ bullpen is a key area needing attention. Their 22 losses, tied with the Kansas City Royals, highlight a deficiency at closer. Bringing in veteran relievers could strengthen the team without sacrificing top prospects. This consideration gains weight as the team hasn’t reached the postseason since their 2019 World Series win and holds two of the top 42 picks in the July draft.

Toboni is aware that while the team’s youthful core offers promise, making hasty decisions could jeopardize future potential. The focus is on improvement without compromising the long-term prospects of the franchise.
