Cancellation of Zoolumination Festival
The Nashville Zoo has reported the cancellation of its annual Zoolumination festival. The event will not proceed for the November 2026-27 season due to visa denials affecting the Chinese artisans responsible for building the attraction. The artisans, connected with InLight Festival Group, were unable to secure visas to travel to Tennessee.
This decision follows a similar cancellation in Des Moines, Iowa, earlier this year, where Chinese workers faced visa denials, pointing to a broader issue impacting cultural events dependent on international artists in the U.S.
Visa Issues and Impact
Neither the Nashville Zoo nor InLight Festival Group has specified the number of affected artisans or the visa categories involved. However, these visa issues coincide with stringent measures on some visa programs during the Trump administration.
Newsweek attempted to contact the U.S. State Department and InLight for further comment.
Zoolumination’s Background
The Zoolumination festival, described as the largest lantern festival in the U.S., has been a notable holiday attraction since its debut in 2019. It features over 1,000 handmade silk lanterns, crafted by artisans from Zigong, China. The festival has drawn significant visitor numbers throughout the winter season.
Efforts to find alternative solutions to the visa issue proved unsuccessful, as stated by the zoo.
InLight Festival Group and Artisans
The lantern displays are created through a collaboration with InLight Festival Group, a global lantern festival company. InLight has organized numerous festivals internationally, showcasing the work of specialist artisans from Zigong, a city renowned for its lantern-making skills developed over centuries.
New Festival: Glow Wild
Despite the cancellation of Zoolumination, the Nashville Zoo is launching a new holiday event, Glow Wild. This event will feature illuminated wildlife displays, festive installations, and an 85-foot synchronized Christmas tree. Glow Wild is scheduled from November 13 to January 3, 2027.
