Republican Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky has been discharged from a rehabilitation center and will continue his recovery at home. The former Senate leader, admitted to the hospital on June 14, later revealed that a fall led to his hospitalization and the need for physical therapy.

At 84 years old, McConnell has not provided a specific date for his return to the Capitol. However, the Senate is expected to adjourn soon for the customary August recess. Once adjourned, votes are likely to be on hold for about five weeks.

“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” McConnell stated.

Having had polio during early childhood, McConnell has long experienced difficulty walking and climbing stairs. Since leaving the hospital, the Office of the Attending Physician noted that McConnell has been undergoing a rigorous physical therapy program. This includes multiple daily sessions aimed at rebuilding strength and minimizing the risk of future falls. Determined to complete his seventh term, which ends in January, McConnell’s absence has been felt in the Senate.

Republicans faced challenges advancing a farm bill out of committee Thursday due to McConnell’s absence. Committee chairman, Senator John Boozman of Arkansas, mentioned discussing the bill with McConnell earlier this week.

“I know how much he would have wanted to be here to advocate for Kentucky’s farmers and rural communities,” stated Boozman at the committee meeting.

Despite his determination to fulfill his term, McConnell has faced criticism for not being transparent about his health. Andy Beshear, the Democratic governor of Kentucky, has called for McConnell to either show fitness to continue serving or resign following his extended hospital stay.
