Missouri Foster Mother Sentenced for Child Endangerment, Avoids Prison

A 70-year-old foster mother in Missouri, Brenda Deutsch, faced accusations of trading a teenager for a monkey. She avoided prison despite harsh condemnation from a judge. The judge described her actions as reprehensible and expressed apologies to the victims, highlighting the failures of the foster care system.

Brenda Deutsch received a seven-year prison sentence for child endangerment. However, a judge in Lincoln County suspended the sentence and placed her on three years of probation. This decision allows her to remain free if she abides by the probation terms, according to a report from FOX2 St. Louis.

Judge Thomas Frawley revoked Deutsch’s foster care license during the proceedings. He criticized the state of Missouri for previously allowing her to retain it. He acknowledged the system’s shortcomings, expressing regret to the victims present in the courtroom.

Brina Johnson, Deutsch’s biological daughter, testified about the alleged abuse. She expressed disappointment with the outcome. She noted that a teenager in the courtroom was the individual involved in the allegations of being traded for a monkey. According to Johnson, the conversation with Deutsch regarding trading the foster child was recorded and shared with detectives.

Authorities arrested Deutsch in April following claims of sending the foster child, now 17, to an unfamiliar Texas home. Court documents reported that Deutsch had sought permission to take the girl to Texas under the guise of visiting a friend. The situation raised concerns after an anonymous tip reported physical and mental abuse of the child.

Investigators discovered allegations of trading the teenager for an exotic animal, leading to her stay in Texas. A witness confirmed the girl’s presence in an unsanitary home filled with exotic animals. The child was eventually placed under Texas child protective services’ care.

Deutsch admitted in court to lacking knowledge about the Texas home where she sent the child. Reports indicate that the teenager suffered alleged physical abuse, including being struck with objects like a paddle and shoes. During one alleged incident, she attempted to soften blows to her body while on the floor. Deutsch allegedly removed the teen’s clothes and threatened her life if she did not comply with demands.

Outside the courthouse, Deutsch declined to comment, shielding her face and leaving without addressing reporters.

Deutsch had fostered over 200 children over the years. Despite the sentence’s leniency, Johnson found some solace in the judge’s critique of the system. She remarked on the acknowledgment of the systemic failure, recognizing that the situation should never have occurred.
