Background and Suspect Profile
A Mississippi teenager, Cordarius Hobbs, 17, is accused of killing an elderly couple, Billy Blair, 74, and his wife, Virginia Carol Blair, 71, in their Mendenhall home. According to an incident report accessed by Fox News Digital, Hobbs was already a suspect in several burglaries and car thefts in the area.
Incident Details
The incident occurred on June 3 when Hobbs allegedly broke into the Blairs’ residence. Family members revealed during a preliminary hearing in July that Hobbs had previously worked for the couple, assisting with tasks such as household cleaning. Despite his previous involvement with the family, the teen now faces serious allegations.
When officers arrived, they suspected a troubled juvenile, known to us as Cordarius Hobbs, who is also a suspect in other crimes, the incident report noted.
Statements from Family and Authorities
Billy Newsome, Hobbs’ grandfather, defended his grandson by stating the circumstances of the crime do not add up. He questioned the logic of Hobbs robbing a house where he previously worked and highlighted the absence of a quick escape plan, despite knowing law enforcement was nearby.
Three contractors discovered an open car door and guns inside the vehicle when they arrived to install a generator at the Blairs’ home. They promptly notified the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department for a welfare check, leading to a confrontation with Hobbs.
Crime Scene and Investigation
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation indicated that upon arrival, officers encountered gunfire, resulting in a two-hour standoff. Hobbs attempted to flee but was captured without any weapons on him. In court, an investigator described finding Carol Blair in a bedroom, shot in the back of the head. Her husband was located in the kitchen with facial gunshot wounds.
Defense and Legal Proceedings
Hobbs’ attorney, Zachary Vaughn, mentioned the absence of direct forensic evidence linking his client to the crime. Vaughn suggested the possibility of another person being involved, as evidenced by the gunshot wounds’ locations.
Vaughn stated, There was nothing to say he’s the principal or the shooter. It’s compelling evidence that someone else could be involved.
Charges and Community Reaction
Hobbs is charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of burglary, along with 10 other charges. He was denied bond. The victims’ family expressed their grief and heartbreak over the loss on social media.
