Two individuals aboard a military helicopter died on Wednesday when it crashed in Salado, Texas, according to the Bell County Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m., sparking multiple 911 calls. Salado is located approximately 50 miles north of Austin.

The helicopter involved was an AH-64 U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter based at Fort Hood. Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, the acting commanding general, emphasized the site’s security and the support of initial response efforts in a statement. He extended condolences to the crew and their families as more details emerge.

The victims’ identities have not been disclosed publicly. The Bell County Sheriff’s Office reported no structural damage or additional injuries related to the crash.

“It crashed into a field, and you could tell it was a violent crash,” Cliff Coleman from the Bell County Sheriff’s Office remarked on the scene.

The crash resulted in a significant fire that appeared uncontrollable, burning a large area of land and necessitating some evacuations in the vicinity. Local emergency responders, military personnel, and law enforcement agencies were involved in the response. Fort Hood’s criminal investigation division is handling the inquiry.

According to the Army’s website, the AH-64 Apache helicopter is a twin-engine, four-bladed attack helicopter designed for stability and armed missions. It is described as “the most advanced aerial fighting vehicle in the world.”
