Primary election battles in Michigan are heating up as Abdul El-Sayed faces off against moderate Haley Stevens in a high-stakes Democratic Senate race. In addition to the Senate race, Christina Hines, a prosecutor and Democratic candidate in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, secured her party’s nomination during Tuesday’s primary election. For Democrats, Hines’ focus on affordability and her background as a special victims prosecutor are key elements in their strategy to reclaim the district and reduce the GOP’s narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“My work was a different kind of chaos. Protecting families from predators isn’t just a job for me. It’s a mission,” Hines stated in a campaign video. “Now, families like ours are getting impacted by a system that only serves the wealthy.”
Although the district has leaned Republican in recent years, it remains competitive. Incumbent Rep. John James last secured re-election in 2024 with a 51.1% to 45.0% victory over Democratic challenger Carl Marlinga. In the 2022 cycle, James narrowly won against Marlinga by a margin of 48.8% to 48.3%.
Rep. John James announced he would vacate his seat to pursue a gubernatorial bid. “My family, like countless others, came to our great state for opportunities offered by our manufacturing and automotive industries and to achieve the American dream,” James said. With the seat open, Hines has positioned her candidacy as essential for protecting the country against what she describes as an overzealous administration and institutional corruption.
“Congress has too many millionaires but not nearly enough moms who get things done,” Hines stated. Her career as a prosecutor included helping victims of sexual abuse and human trafficking, as well as cases involving homicide, torture, and hate crimes.
Hines outlined her priorities as reducing living costs by tackling “price gouging,” raising the minimum wage, investing in technical education, and safeguarding federal programs like Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare from cuts proposed by the Trump administration.
Her platform has garnered endorsements from local leaders such as Carl Marlinga, the former Democratic nominee against James, and Michael Taylor, Mayor of Sterling Heights. With her party’s nomination secured, Hines will advance to the general election on November 3.
