Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, is embracing the support of left-wing influencer Hasan Piker. Despite Piker’s history of controversial remarks, the collaboration continues. Piker, who has a large online following, is known for making offensive comments regarding 9/11 and displaying a lack of patriotism. This alliance has stirred concerns among some Democrats who fear it might negatively impact El-Sayed’s campaign, particularly with swing voters, in the critical Michigan Senate race during the midterms.
The approach of the 25th anniversary of 9/11 has brought further scrutiny to El-Sayed’s campaign activities. While many Americans prepare to commemorate the tragedy, El-Sayed’s public schedule on that day did not list any remembrance event. Instead, it included participation in a Mexican festival, a farmers market, and a county fair. However, his campaign later confirmed that he would attend a 9/11 remembrance memorial, even though it was not publicly listed on the campaign site.
Some of the events highlighted in his campaign schedule have a celebratory nature. Fiesta Mexicana, which El-Sayed is set to attend, promotes itself as a three-day event featuring mariachi bands and cultural festivities to celebrate Mexican heritage. Alongside, the Allegan County Fair offers entertainment, food, games, and rides. His campaign stated that El-Sayed would not attend two of the events mentioned, but did not clarify which ones.
El-Sayed has expressed that the 9/11 attacks were a horrific attack on America’s freedom. His spokeswoman reiterated that he will join Michiganders in honoring the 25th anniversary of the event. Still, El-Sayed’s history regarding 9/11 remains complicated. The resurfacing of past videos and posts, including those by Piker claiming America deserved 9/11, have added to this complexity. El-Sayed labeled such statements as ‘dumb’ but didn’t fully distance himself from Piker.
Earlier, El-Sayed’s older blog entries and social media posts emerged. In these, he compared 9/11 with the January 6th Capitol riot and equated former President Donald Trump with Osama bin Laden. He called for similar outrage from Americans toward the COVID-19 pandemic as was displayed after 9/11 and lamented the deaths from America’s War on Terror.
