Michael Jackson Biopic Makes Box Office History

Michael Jackson continues to captivate audiences with his posthumous box office dominance. The biopic ‘Michael’ is poised to reach the $1 billion mark, solidifying his legacy both in music and film history.

Recent reports confirm that ‘Michael’ has now surpassed ‘Oppenheimer’ as the highest-grossing biopic, despite having released only seven months after Nolan’s Oscar-winning project. As of now, ‘Michael’ has amassed $977 million, compared to ‘Oppenheimer’s $975 million. Behind these two is Queen’s biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, which has earned $911 million.

“It was only a matter of time. The King of Pop 👑,” one fan commented, highlighting Jackson’s enduring popularity.

The movie, directed by Antoine Fuqua, explores Jackson’s evolution from his early days with the Jackson 5 to becoming a global sensation. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, stars in the title role, with Colman Domingo and Nia Long playing his parents, Joe and Katherine.

Despite achieving remarkable box office milestones, ‘Michael’ received mixed reviews from critics. Its Tomatometer score stands at 38%, while Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter rates it at a substantial 97%, reflecting strong fan approval.

Critics have noted that the film does not extensively explore the controversial aspects of Jackson’s life. Nevertheless, this hasn’t hindered its commercial success.

While ‘Michael’ is rated PG-13, ‘Oppenheimer’, starring Cillian Murphy, holds an R rating. Some social media users argue this factor influenced the films’ box office performance.

Jackson’s biopic has taken the domestic market by storm, opening with $97 million and earning $217 million globally. Fans and audiences continue to celebrate the King of Pop, affirming that his legacy remains untouchable.

Meanwhile, ‘Oppenheimer’ gained critical acclaim, bagging seven out of thirteen nominations at the 96th Academy Awards in 2024, including Best Director for Nolan and Best Actor for Murphy.
