Manny Fernandez, renowned for his impressive pass-rushing abilities in the NFL, passed away on May 24 at the age of 79. The Miami Dolphins announced the news, mourning the loss of a key player in their history.
Fernandez dedicated his entire eight-year career in the NFL, from 1968 to 1975, to the Dolphins. He played a crucial role in leading Don Shula’s team to victory in Super Bowls VII and VIII. His exceptional performance, including two sacks, was instrumental in achieving the NFL’s first perfect season with a 17-0 record.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Manny Fernandez, a member of the 1972 Perfect Team, a two-time Super Bowl champion, Ring of Honor member and an anchor of the Dolphins’ legendary No-Name Defense,” stated the team. “His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins’ success throughout the early 1970s, particularly in the team’s three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, in which he produced some of the most memorable defensive performances in the history of the game. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and teammates as we remember one of the best players in Dolphins history.”
Born in San Lorenzo, California, Fernandez joined the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent from the University of Utah before the 1968 season. Reflecting on his early life, he mentioned in a 2006 interview, “When I was at San Lorenzo (High School), I didn’t have a lot of self-confidence. I dreamed of being a Raider, but figured I’d be a Longshoreman. I never really looked beyond tomorrow.”
By his third season with the Dolphins, Fernandez claimed the All-Pro title and even received an MVP ballot in 1970. Primarily positioned as a defensive tackle, he achieved 35 sacks and six fumble recoveries in 103 regular season games. In the postseason, he added 4.5 sacks over ten games. His performance in Super Bowl XII saw him credited with 17 tackles, contributing to the Dolphins’ 14-7 win over the Washington Redskins to secure their perfect season.
After retiring, Fernandez settled in Georgia, where he worked in the insurance industry. In December 2014, his contributions to the team were commemorated with his selection to the Dolphins’ Ring of Honor.
