After facing significant backlash from local residents and environmental advocates, Mexican authorities have decided to reject Royal Caribbean’s proposal for a large water park along the Caribbean coast.
Critics argued that the development threatened Mahahual’s delicate ecosystem and the small coastal community’s identity. At a press conference on May 19, Mexico’s Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia Bárcena, announced the decision, stating, “Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day project will not be approved.” She emphasized that even though the company considers withdrawing the project, SEMARNAT will not grant approval.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum echoed these environmental concerns during her press conference, stressing the importance of preserving the ecological balance, particularly for the reefs.
A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean expressed disappointment about the decision but acknowledged Mexico’s environmental authority roles. They stated, “Mahahual is a special place that deserves care and protection. We are optimistic about advancing our investment responsibly in Mexico.” The company aims to collaborate with stakeholders to develop environmental infrastructure, create local jobs, and assist community programs.
The proposed site, located in Mahahual, Quintana Roo, was to feature an expansive water park, pools, beaches, restaurants, and bars. Royal Caribbean initially unveiled the Perfect Day Mexico project in October 2024, targeting a 2027 opening. However, a Change.org petition demanding the project’s cancellation has gathered over 4.8 million signatures, highlighting concerns regarding local community disruptions and environmental impacts.
The petition argued, “Mahahual is not an amusement park. It is a fishing town inhabited by local communities who live facing the sea.” It emphasized potential threats to community rights, identity, and lifestyle.
Royal Caribbean’s existing destination, CocoCay in the Bahamas, serves over two million visitors annually and has proven financially successful. However, Mahahual offers close proximity to the Mesoamerican Reef, attracting scuba divers and tourists interested in marine ecosystems and coral formations.
