Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment have announced the return of Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’ to theaters across the nation for a limited run this September. This release precedes the much-anticipated sequel slated for 2027.
The original 2004 film, which portrays the final 12 hours of Jesus’ life leading up to the crucifixion, will be showcased from September 10 through September 17, remastered in 4K and Dolby Atmos sound.
Audiences will also be treated to an exclusive preview of the sequel, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,’ set for a May 6, 2027 release, followed by ‘The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two’ on May 25, 2028, during Memorial Day weekend.
Gibson’s film initially starred Jim Caviezel as Jesus and grossed over $610 million globally, a significant return on its $30 million budget. It also garnered Academy Award nominations for its makeup, score, and cinematography, despite some controversy over its violence and content.
Kevin Grayson, president of worldwide distribution for Lionsgate, expressed enthusiasm about this re-release. ‘Bringing it back to theaters in a stunning new restoration allows longtime audiences to experience it anew while inviting a new generation to discover it for the first time,’ he stated.
Actor Jim Caviezel enjoyed acclaim for his portrayal of Jesus Christ in the original film. However, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will assume the role in the sequels due to challenges with de-aging technology and scheduling.
Mel Gibson has expressed his vision for the sequels, noting they will delve into ‘the spiritual realms’ and the struggle for ‘the soul of mankind.’ ‘This is far more than a film to me,’ he remarked about ‘The Resurrection: Part One.’ ‘It’s a mission I’ve carried for over 20 years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.’
Tickets for the special theater run of ‘The Passion of the Christ’ are available starting July 24, online and at participating theaters. A list of available locations is provided on Fathom Entertainment’s website.
