Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Trump met in New York City at Gracie Mansion, marking their third meeting but their first at this location. Previously, Mamdani had visited Trump at the White House after the mayoral election and again in February.
During their prior meeting, Mamdani presented a major housing project in Queens, contingent on substantial federal aid. This proposal resurfaced in their latest discussions, albeit with few specifics shared publicly. The mayor emphasized the recurring theme of improving New Yorkers’ lives, a topic consistently addressed in his dialogues with the president.
At the subsequent news conference, Mamdani updated the housing proposal, which involves constructing the largest rail deck over Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard in Queens, followed by 12,000 housing units. The proposed development was initially introduced during former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s tenure.
“We spoke about Sunnyside Yards,” Mamdani stated. “We agreed to establish a new level of conversation between our housing and operations team at City Hall and the White House team for these 12,000 homes and 30,000 jobs.”
President Trump acknowledged the need for federal involvement in the project, describing it as heavily reliant on federal approvals and funding. He praised Sunnyside Yard’s potential as an excellent location.
Carlo Scissura, who served on the initial Sunnyside Yards task force, expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasizing the site’s potential to revitalize a significant area. However, the project faces opposition. City Councilwoman Julie Won, representing the district where the rail yard is located, questioned whether resources could be better allocated elsewhere to address immediate issues like housing and healthcare crises.
The meeting occurred during the United Nations General Assembly week, where President Trump planned to address key international issues, including the war with Iran and the situation in Gaza. His agenda included discussions with leaders from the United Kingdom, Japan, Venezuela, and Ukraine. However, a scheduling conflict prevented a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
