Massachusetts Mayor Faces Fraud Charges

Brian DePeña, the mayor of Lawrence, Massachusetts, is under scrutiny after being arrested for alleged fraud involving COVID-19 relief funds. Social media buzzed when his lawyer claimed DePeña doesn’t speak English, dodging questions from the press.

DePeña, aged 61, faces accusations of misusing over $1.5 million from the Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL). These loans are part of the CARES Act, aimed at aiding struggling businesses during the pandemic. Reports allege DePeña used these funds, intended for his business Tenares Tire Services Inc., for personal debts and his campaign.

“He doesn’t speak English. No comment,” DePeña’s lawyer said, while DePeña repeatedly responded with “God bless you” to reporters.

The exchange captured online sparked debate about language skills required for public office. Some criticized DePeña for avoiding English in the interview.

DePeña, originally from the Dominican Republic, moved to the U.S. without documentation but later became a citizen. He has been serving as mayor since his election in November 2021 after time on the city council.

U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley remarked on the breach of public trust, asserting a commitment to tackling fraud. Conviction might lead DePeña to serve up to 30 years in prison.

DePeña’s situation adds to a broader political conversation. Criticism has mounted against officials who are not fluent in English. Social media comments asked why a non-English-speaking individual holds office. Controversy increased with footage suggesting DePeña involved in a minor car accident while leaving a media interaction.

His lawyer, Carlos Apostle, and DePeña’s office were contacted for further comments. The case continues to develop, underlining ongoing concerns about accountability and integrity in elected positions.
