Former NBA lottery picks rarely return to the league after extended stints overseas. Mario Hezonja’s recent signing is a notable exception. The Cleveland Cavaliers signed the 31-year-old Croatian player to a one-year, $2.8 million veteran minimum contract, marking his NBA return for the first time since 2020.

Mario “Super” Hezonja was drafted fifth overall by the Orlando Magic in 2015. Despite high expectations, his performance fell short of projections. Over his five seasons in the NBA with Orlando, New York, and Portland, Hezonja averaged 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists across 330 games.

Instead of becoming another forgotten draft disappointment, Hezonja moved to Europe and revitalized his career. Playing for Real Madrid, he emerged as one of the top wings in Europe. Hezonja secured a EuroLeague title and earned MVP honors in the Liga Endesa last season, solidifying his status among the elite in European basketball.

Cleveland’s decision to sign Hezonja represents a low-risk move with potential upside. The Cavaliers acquire a 6-foot-8 wing who has proven his abilities at high levels outside the NBA. If Hezonja struggles to adapt, the Cavs face minimal consequences. However, if he performs well, they may have secured a valuable asset at a bargain price this offseason.

This move follows the Cavaliers missing out on LeBron James, signaling their continued ambition to build a competitive roster for the upcoming season.
