Mackenzie Shirilla, convicted for a deadly 2022 crash, has begun working in prison while serving her life sentence. Ohio prison officials confirmed Shirilla’s role as a food service worker at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. Further details about her assignment remain undisclosed due to public-records exemptions.
Details of the Conviction
Shirilla, now 21, entered prison after being sentenced to two concurrent terms of 15 years to life. She was found guilty of deliberately driving her Toyota Camry into a building, resulting in the deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and their friend, Davion Flanagan, 19, in Strongsville, Ohio on July 31, 2022.
Police records reveal that the vehicle struck the PLIDCO building at high speed, approximately 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. Data from the Event Data Recorder indicated full accelerator engagement without any use of the service brake before the crash.
“Dominos were falling into place for a conclusion that was far from accidental,” investigators recounted.
Investigations and Charges
Initially, the deaths were classified as accidental. However, authorities later ruled the crash as intentional homicide. Shirilla was convicted on four counts of murder, among other charges, for the incident that claimed two lives. It was alleged she aimed to end a toxic relationship with Russo, while Flanagan became an unintended casualty.
Appeal and Legal Developments
Following renewed attention from the Netflix docuseries, “The Crash,” Shirilla’s legal team sought an appeal with the Ohio Supreme Court. Her lawyers argue that her trial counsel inadequately investigated her medical condition, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which might have caused unconsciousness before impact.
The defense claims this aspect was briefly mentioned during the trial despite prior notices from Shirilla and her family. They assert that expert testimony regarding POTS could have offered an explanation for her failure to brake before the crash. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley’s office maintains her guilt without question.
