The 2026 NFL season has reached Week 3, and teams are beginning to show their strengths and weaknesses. Some teams look like playoff contenders, while others appear to need significant changes. Among the teams facing challenges is the Los Angeles Chargers.
During an event in New York City for Bounty, Rob Gronkowski shared his views on the Chargers. He described them as ‘the biggest mess in the NFL,’ emphasizing their unexpected early struggles.
Despite being led by head coach Jim Harbaugh and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, the Chargers started 0-2 after facing the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders. Both opponents were not anticipated to have strong playoff chances this season, which made the Chargers’ losses surprising.
The Los Angeles Chargers I would say are probably the biggest mess in the NFL in terms of how they’re playing and where they should be.
Gronkowski highlighted the disorganized play, noting issues with the offensive line. He urged the team to improve protection for quarterback Justin Herbert to enhance their performance.
The Chargers were expected to be Super Bowl contenders this year due to McDaniel’s dynamic offensive approach. However, they have managed only 14 points per game across their two games, ranking third-lowest in the league. Additionally, they stand 23rd in total offensive yards per game.
Herbert has struggled to find his rhythm. The offensive line has contributed to these challenges, but Herbert’s performance has also fallen short of expectations. He has thrown only two touchdowns and has three interceptions, completing just 59.3% of his passes.
Gronkowski emphasized that the team’s struggles are not solely Herbert’s fault. ‘It’s not just one thing that’s going wrong. It’s a lot of things going wrong,’ he said, pointing to issues with the offensive coordinator, offensive line, and wide receivers.
It’s football. It’s such a team game that one player can’t make you collapse the way they’re collapsing. It’s everyone as a whole.
The Chargers face a challenging schedule ahead, including a game against the 2-0 Buffalo Bills, followed by matchups with the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens.
