The Minnesota state House Speaker, Lisa Demuth, has emerged victorious in the Republican primary for governor, according to a projection from NBC News. Her win marks a significant upset over MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, a known ally of former President Donald Trump. This sets up a general election contest with Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar.
Despite leading in early public polling and receiving an endorsement from Trump, Lindell’s campaign struggled in the final weeks. Republican criticisms, notably questions about his residency from the Minnesota Republican Party chairman, hindered his momentum. These factors prompted many within the GOP to back Demuth as a more viable candidate to challenge Klobuchar.

Since 2020, Lindell has confronted several legal challenges due to his support of Trump’s unfounded claims regarding the presidential election that resulted in Joe Biden’s victory. These controversies have contributed to his political hurdles.
At a recent Minnesota Farmfest event, Sen. Klobuchar shared the stage with three Republican gubernatorial hopefuls, criticizing them as aligning too closely with Trump. Lisa Demuth, along with Trump and other Republicans, has been vocal against Democrats for their handling of two significant fraud scandals in the state involving Medicaid and pandemic aid funds.
Demuth has specifically pointed to hundreds of millions in welfare-designated funds being misappropriated, faults she ascribes to “incompetent Democrat control.” She also references her role in establishing the Fraud Prevention Agency Oversight Committee during her time in the state House as a key effort in combating such issues.
In a twist to the electoral scene, Democratic Governor Tim Walz decided not to seek reelection, attributing this choice to the backlash over the fraud scandals. Consequently, Klobuchar announced her candidacy soon after his decision, becoming one of four senators this year to aim for a gubernatorial position.

Looking ahead to November, the Republican party faces the challenge of overcoming Minnesota’s political leanings. In the last presidential election, then-Vice President Kamala Harris secured the state with a margin of about 4 percentage points, alongside Walz as her running mate.
