The smoke from a persistent fire at a cold-storage facility in Los Angeles has lessened over the last five days. Firefighters continue to tackle the remaining flare-ups, but concerns remain for residents in the Boyle Heights neighborhood.
What began as a dense, black plume has transformed into a diluted gray haze. Despite this reduction, it has caused significant distress for those living nearby. Residents experience breathing difficulties, headaches, and eye irritation, even while inside their homes.
Consuelo Granadas, an 80-year-old resident, described the conditions as unbearable. ‘You can’t breathe inside the home. The stink is never-ending,’ she remarked. Despite the challenges, Granadas stays put to care for her cat and two dogs.
Nearby, in East Los Angeles, Mayra Grijalva faces similar issues. She wears a white N-95 mask and sunglasses during her breaks from working remotely. Smoke still infiltrates her home, even with taped door frames. A county worker was recently seen checking the situation on her street.
Residents are waiting for relief as cleanup and firefighting operations continue.
