Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim have decided to remain with ’60 Minutes’ after a period of uncertainty. Their decision comes after expressing frustration and disappointment over recent changes at the CBS News program.
In a message to the show’s staff, the correspondents announced their commitment to “stay and fight” to uphold the reputation of the well-regarded news show. They stated, “We don’t want to see ‘60 Minutes’ die.”
Despite staying, the trio criticized the decision by CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss to dismiss several key personnel, including executive producer Tanya Simon. They termed these departures as “heartbreaking.” They also warned that any compromise of editorial independence might lead to their exit.
The appointment of Nick Bilton, with no prior broadcast experience, as the new leader of ’60 Minutes’ has stirred reactions within the newsroom. Scott Pelley, a veteran correspondent, openly opposed Bilton’s appointment, which led to his dismissal following a confrontational meeting.
Since then, Bilton has attempted to assure the correspondents of his commitment to maintaining the show’s journalistic standards. During a meeting with Stahl, and in communications with staff, he emphasized that ’60 Minutes’ would remain editorially autonomous from its parent company, which is overseen by tech mogul David Ellison, who appointed Weiss.
Stahl, in a discussion with The New York Times, explained the decision came after extensive deliberations, including calls across different continents. Wertheim participated remotely from Paris, where he is covering the French Open.
CBS News has yet to comment on these developments.
