WASHINGTON — The name Leon Black appears repeatedly in the Jeffrey Epstein investigative files released by the Justice Department. Black, a prominent billionaire and former CEO, had an extensive business relationship with Epstein.
In an email from 2014, Epstein wrote to Black, expressing his willingness to assist Black, both in known and unknown ways. This relationship is now the focus as Black prepares to testify before the House Oversight Committee. The committee is examining the federal response to the Epstein case, especially connections to Epstein’s financial network that funded sex trafficking.
Black, along with other notable figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bill Gates, faces questions about his links to Epstein. Black’s attorney, Susan Estrich, informed NBC News of an independent inquiry requested by Black. A former federal prosecutor reviewed extensive documents and interviewed over 20 individuals, concluding that Black engaged Epstein for legal financial advice.
Estrich emphasized that Epstein’s services were vetted by reputable law and accounting firms, underscoring Black’s lack of knowledge regarding Epstein’s criminal activities prior to his arrest. Despite Black’s denial of wrongdoing, his association with Epstein has tarnished his reputation, leading to his exit from Apollo Global Management in 2021.
The release of Epstein’s files has intensified scrutiny of Black’s financial activities. His connections with Epstein included significant payments for tax and estate planning advice, despite Epstein’s past conviction. Black’s phone number appears in the files over 200 times, with numerous messages indicating frequent communication.
Black settled a case with the U.S. Virgin Islands, agreeing to pay $62.5 million to avoid further legal action linked to Epstein’s trafficking operations. Allegations have surfaced questioning Black’s financial transactions with Epstein, including substantial payments purportedly for legitimate advice.
Sen. Ron Wyden has been investigating these dealings, raising concerns about potential hush money facilitated through Epstein. Other allegations involve claims of sexual misconduct against Black, which he denies. These include accusations of assault linked to Epstein’s premises and other claims from individuals alleging harassment and abuse.
One case involves a woman accusing Black of abuse during her adolescence. Though a federal judge sanctioned her and her legal team for mishandling evidence, the case is proceeding. Black insists the allegations are false, attributing them to attempts at extortion.
