A police officer in Las Vegas, who was also a Marine veteran, tragically lost his life during a response to a report of an armed individual, authorities stated. The suspect involved in the incident was also killed.

Officers, along with police drones, were dispatched to a location in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue just before 4 p.m. This action followed a report that an individual was brandishing a firearm and appeared intoxicated, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

“Multiple people killed in shooting at Idaho In-N-Out restaurant, suspect dead.”

Sheriff Kevin McMahill reported that one officer suffered injuries in the altercation and was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The officers identified the armed suspect close to Mountain Vista Street and the Interstate 11 underpass. The suspect began firing at the officers, leading at least one officer to return fire. The suspect was declared dead on the spot.

A 30-year-old officer was hurt in the gunfight and was taken to University Medical Center, where he eventually passed away, as shared by Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill during a press briefing.

“A 30-year-old Las Vegas police officer was then worked on heroically by the Clark County Fire Department, other officers and EMS. He was transported to UMC where nurses worked to save his life,” McMahill stated.

“Deputy US Marshal fatally shot while serving arrest warrant in Louisiana.”

The sheriff explained that the officer was a Marine veteran and employed by the police department since November 2023.

“Unfortunately, our officer has passed,” he added. McMahill highlighted the officer’s service to the country and the community. “As you can imagine, I have lots of grieving police officers and a grieving community,” he added.

The police department conveyed its sympathies to the officer’s family and committed to offering support to them “in every way we can in the days ahead.” The suspect was confirmed dead at the scene.

Other law enforcement agencies expressed their sorrow over the officer’s death. The Nevada State Police extended heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on Facebook, noting “Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.”
