Lakers Shift Focus to Defense in Luka Doncic Era

The Los Angeles Lakers have embarked on a new era with Luka Doncic at the core. Early indications from training camp show a strong emphasis on defense, something their star player evidently needs.

LeBron James’ Departure Sparks Roster Overhaul

For the first time since the 2017-18 season, the Lakers will start the season without LeBron James. His exit allowed the Lakers to reconstruct a roster that had long been built around him. Instead of seeking a new superstar, the Lakers have opted to surround Doncic and Austin Reaves with players ready to perform essential tasks on both sides of the court.

New Defensive Additions Making Waves

Only two practices into training camp, the new defensive personnel is already gaining notice. Reaves pointed out Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams, and Adou Thiero for their defensive prowess. With Walker Kessler, a 7-foot-2 center, guarding the rim, scoring against this lineup has proven challenging. Reaves commented, “Trying to score on Matisse and Ziaire, especially with Adou and Walker, is not easy. It’s not fun dealing with them all day.”

Reaves believes these additions could help the Lakers take significant strides toward an NBA championship. “Defensively, we’re going to be much better,” he stated. “Those guys compete every possession, and everyone else performs their roles well. I see our potential.”

Luka Doncic: The Franchise’s Focal Point

Doncic is now the central figure in the franchise. The five-time All-Star led the Lakers to 53 wins in his first full season, clinched his second NBA scoring title, and earned first-team All-NBA honors. However, building around Doncic requires more than offensive power.

Last season, the Lakers ranked 20th in defensive rating and tied for 22nd in blocked shots. The team also lagged in rebounding, making defense and size priorities for the offseason. The front office responded with strategic changes.

Key Acquisitions to Boost Defense

Los Angeles acquired Kessler in a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz and brought in perimeter defenders such as Thybulle and Quentin Grimes. Ziaire Williams also joined the roster, providing head coach JJ Redick with several options to support Doncic and Reaves.

Kessler, among the NBA’s top rim protectors, has consistently ranked in the league’s top five for blocked shots over three seasons. His presence allows the perimeter defenders to be more assertive, knowing they have support behind them. “We’re going to be a nasty defensive team,” Kessler said, emphasizing the team’s potential.

Emphasizing Defensive Aggression

For the Lakers to succeed, their new additions need to focus on defense, rebounding, and creating turnovers, allowing Doncic to excel offensively. Kessler noted that having aggressive defenders makes his role easier. “Blocking a shot is simpler when the player has a defender on him,” he explained.

The intensity of the new Lakers’ defense is clear. Redick modified Wednesday’s practice due to its physical nature. Thybulle reportedly recorded seven steals in the first two days. While this does not guarantee success in the regular season, the Lakers have a defined strategy.

Planning for the Future of the Lakers

With James no longer in the picture, the Lakers are entirely focused on maximizing Doncic’s talents. The strategy involves surrounding him with competent defenders ready to take on difficult assignments. As the games unfold, the Lakers hope their approach will help Doncic steer the franchise into a successful era.
