Kyle Kirkwood’s Victory at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix

WASHINGTON – Kyle Kirkwood triumphed in the Freedom 250 Grand Prix held in Washington, D.C., capturing first place on Sunday afternoon. Kirkwood, an American participant among international competitors, took charge of the race early, seizing the lead from Álex Palou and demonstrating strong performance throughout. Only Palou managed to keep close to him during parts of the competition.

Due to late cautions, Kirkwood’s commanding lead was challenged, offering Christian Lundgaard of Arrow McLaren a chance to surge forward. Lundgaard initially thrived in the final green flag session with his red alternate tires, an advantage over Kirkwood’s primary set. However, as the race progressed, Lundgaard’s advantage diminished.

The podium concluded with Lundgaard securing second place and Kirkwood’s teammate, Will Power, taking third. This victory significantly boosted Kirkwood’s championship aspirations, reducing Palou’s championship lead to 91 points.

Palou faced difficulties, receiving a drive-thru penalty during his initial pit stop. Additional issues with his team’s front left tire further hampered his performance. A major setback occurred on lap 122 when Palou crashed, prompting a late caution.

This marked Kirkwood’s second season victory, following a previous win at the Grand Prix of Arlington. Kirkwood, aged 27, now boasts seven career wins, with six earned on street circuits.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix was a special event commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. President Donald Trump, along with First Lady Melania, participated during the honorary lap and initiated the race with the green flag. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy concluded the event by waving the checkered flag.

The future of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, however, remains uncertain. There are three remaining races in the IndyCar season. Upcoming is a double-header at the Milwaukee Mile followed by the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on September 6.

All NTT IndyCar Series races are broadcast on FOX.
