Kevion Moton’s Impact on Waukegan High School Football

Kevion Moton, a senior at Waukegan High School, plays a key role in the Bulldogs’ football team. Despite the team’s challenging circumstances last year, Moton rarely leaves the field, serving as a versatile contributor on both offense and defense. His dedication to improving the team’s performance is evident in his approach to leadership and hard work.

Moton emphasizes leading by example, saying, “I am not a big talker, but I want my actions to show others how to do things correctly.” His offseason efforts have made an impact on his teammates, increasing their readiness and involvement. This season, Waukegan’s roster features over 40 players, a significant improvement noted by first-year coach Darrell Thomas.

Moton hopes for the Bulldogs to gain more victories. They began the season with a tough loss to Niles North, 41-12, but they aim to rebound against North Chicago at home. “This year we’ve come together more as a team,” Moton expressed. “Some players are still learning, but we’re expecting them to compete.” Waukegan seeks its first multi-win season since 2016, facing past struggles where opposing teams often led with substantial margins.

During the season opener, Moton contributed significantly on defense with three tackles, two leading to losses, and a sack. Using his 6-foot-3, 230-pound build, he also supported the offense by helping secure 213 rushing yards. “Kevion has been playing for us for four years,” Coach Thomas stated, acknowledging Moton’s consistency and work ethic during offseason training and weight room sessions.

Having transitioned from linebacker to defensive end, Moton relishes the position. “At end, there’s more action and they’re more likely to come right at you,” he said, appreciating the active role in stopping offensive pushes.

To enhance his game, Moton undertook training focused on speed and endurance. He participated in speed classes with Zion-Benton track coach Darnell Rios and engaged in rigorous physical activities like running hills and neighborhood sprints. “I definitely noticed a difference,” Moton noted, attributing his improved agility to this training. Senior linebacker Jeremiah Hood remarked on Moton’s influence, highlighting his motivation efforts among peers.

Moton’s dedication stems from his passion for football. “There’s no feeling better than being out there with the team,” he said, cherishing the support of fans during games. His commitment and love for the sport continue to inspire both his teammates and the community.
