Kevin Gausman’s Dominant Pitching Leads Cubs to Victory Over Diamondbacks

Kevin Gausman’s Strategy on the Mound

Kevin Gausman took the mound for the Chicago Cubs against the Arizona Diamondbacks, focusing less on his splitter and more on a barrage of four-seam fastballs. This change in approach seemed to catch the Diamondbacks off guard and led to Gausman achieving a career-high 24 called strikes with his fastball. He pitched seven shutout innings, contributing to the Cubs’ 7-0 win.

Execution and Command

Gausman’s success was not just in changing his pitch strategy but also in its execution. He managed to throw 66% of his pitches as fastballs, crediting catcher Carson Kelly for astute game calling. He noted that Arizona hitters were often anticipating the splitter with two strikes, which he exploited with his fastball.

He demonstrated remarkable fastball command, landing 13 out of 15 first-pitch fastballs for strikes, and limited the Diamondbacks to only two hits from fastballs out of 11 put in play.

Impact on Cubs’ Season

The Cubs acquired Gausman with the expectation that he would strengthen their rotation, especially with Clay Holmes also performing strong lately. The duo is proving essential as the Cubs aim for the playoffs, providing stability amidst uncertainty from some of their left-handers.

“He’s a good energy guy, the work ethic is there, I mean, he’s been doing this for such a long time, and he’s a true pro, and he wants the ball,” Kelly said.

Cubs’ Offensive Display

Monday’s win highlighted the team’s depth, even when the top five hitters struggled. Pedro Ramírez shone with an RBI triple and two-hit performance, raising his average to .290. Seiya Suzuki and Michael Conforto added to the score with crucial hits, while other players capitalized on mistakes by Arizona’s pitchers.

Team Dynamics and Contributions

The Cubs have demonstrated a collective buy-in from players to pursue a deeper postseason run this year. Michael Conforto’s willingness to embrace his role has positively set the tone for the team’s success.

“There’s an expectation. One of the big things is having a real honest belief that you can win the whole thing, and I think there’s no doubt we believe that,” Conforto explained.

The Cubs showed resilience and teamwork, securing their position as playoff contenders with aspirations of postseason triumph.
