British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday. This move was driven by his own party after missteps eroded voter trust following a significant election win two years ago. Starmer pledged steady leadership and economic growth, but admitted he will step down as the Labour Party’s leader until a successor is chosen.

There is much anticipation that Andy Burnham, former Greater Manchester Mayor, will be selected as the new leader. Burnham confirmed his candidacy on social media. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Burnham’s main rival, declared his support for Burnham.

Burnham’s win in a recent special parliamentary election prompted Starmer’s decision to resign. Labour representatives are rallying behind Burnham with hopes of restoring the party’s success. Burnham returned to Parliament on Monday, after years as mayor, where he formally took the oath in the House of Commons.

“I will put myself forward as part of this process,” Burnham stated.

Political analysts speculate Burnham might become the leader without a contest due to strong party support. Though the next general election is slated for 2029, Burnham has not confirmed plans for an early vote.

Starmer is the sixth prime minister in a decade to announce an early departure from office. His statement coincides with the 10th anniversary of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, which still impacts the nation’s economy and political landscape.

Despite previously insisting on maintaining his position, Starmer acknowledged the party’s calls for a new leader. He noted the Labour Party’s dwindling popularity and pledged to step down gracefully. He also communicated his decision to King Charles III.

Nominations for the leadership race will open on July 9, and a new leader is expected to be appointed by September 1. If Burnham emerges as the sole candidate, the process might conclude by mid-July. Starmer’s tenure was marred by challenges in delivering economic growth and public service improvements.

Among his missteps was the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson, linked to Jeffrey Epstein, as U.K. ambassador to the U.S. Labour faces competition from the Green Party and Reform UK, which serves as a challenge to its voter base.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump commented on Starmer’s resignation, attributing it to policy failures on immigration and energy.

Despite domestic challenges, Starmer earned international commendation for his leadership role in rallying European support for Ukraine against Russia. He also engaged in efforts to address the turmoil from the Iran conflict. Starmer might participate in a NATO summit in Turkey before transitioning out of leadership.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed gratitude for Starmer’s contributions to European security.

While Burnham enjoys strong support within the Labour Party, some members argue Starmer faced unfair treatment. Analyst Olivia O’Sullivan suggests Burnham may resonate with voters confronting the rising Reform Party. However, O’Sullivan warns that popularity might not equate to transformative policy changes.
