Jonathan Kuminga Signs with Minnesota Timberwolves

Forward Jonathan Kuminga has signed a two-year contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, worth $12.4 million. This deal includes a player option for the second season, as reported by NBA insider Shams Charania from ESPN.

Kuminga had drawn interest from multiple teams in the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers were perceived as strong contenders to acquire him. The Lakers’ offer was reportedly similar in monetary terms, and they proposed a potential starting position.

However, Kuminga chose the Timberwolves. According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, this decision was strategically made to engage in a short-term contract, allowing him to maintain control over his career and re-enter free agency the following year. Offers were also reportedly made by the Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers, but Kuminga opted for Minnesota.

In joining the Timberwolves, Kuminga becomes part of a promising roster. The team boasts significant talent, including superstar Anthony Edwards and defensive expert Rudy Gobert, along with forward Jaden McDaniels. A key addition is point guard LaMelo Ball, enhancing the team’s competitive edge as they aim for an NBA championship.

Kuminga is expected to start as the power forward, a role previously held by Julius Randle and Naz Reid. Reports from Jon Krawczynski and Sam Amick suggest that this move is seen as an upgrade for the team. Kuminga’s recruitment involved notable efforts, including active participation from Anthony Edwards and a four-hour meeting in Miami between Kuminga and team president Tim Connelly.

At 23 years old, Kuminga aligns with the young core of the Timberwolves, comprising Edwards, Ball, and McDaniels, who are all aged 25. The success of this young unit could potentially make the Timberwolves a formidable contender in the Western Conference.
