John Hinckley Jr., known for the attempt to assassinate former President Ronald Reagan in 1981, recently shared his sentiments toward actress Jodie Foster. The incident was motivated by his delusional desire to impress Foster.
In a recent interview on the “Mark Joseph Show,” Hinckley expressed his well wishes for Foster. Despite not watching her films, he acknowledged her success and desired a good life for her. Hinckley spoke about his state of mind at the time of the shooting, hoping for an imagined life with Foster.
“I wanted to have like this union with Jodie Foster and live the rest of my life with her,” said Hinckley, referring to his delusional belief.
Hinckley reflected on his thoughts during the time, expecting Foster to be with him regardless of his circumstances post-shooting.
The assassination attempt resulted in severe injuries to Reagan, including a broken rib and a punctured lung. James Brady, the former White House press secretary, was shot in the head and eventually died from his injuries in 2014, which was ruled a homicide. Two others were wounded in the attack.
Following his trial, Hinckley was acquitted due to insanity and subsequently committed to a psychiatric institution. He was released in 2016 and by 2022, was residing in Virginia without court-imposed restrictions.
Hinckley also acknowledged that, in his delusional state, Foster might have been a target of his violent act. He said, “She definitely could have been a target. It’s just fate went the other way.” However, Reagan became the focus instead.
During a 2022 CBS interview, Hinckley issued apologies for his actions. “I’m sorry to the Reagan family, the Brady family, the other families of the victims. I’m sorry to Jodie Foster for bringing her into this,” he stated.
