Jeffries Rejects Medicare for All and DSA Agenda

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, representing New York, recently expressed his position against the Medicare for All initiative and the agenda of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Speaking on ‘Meet the Press,’ Jeffries emphasized the importance of making healthcare more affordable as Democrats aim to regain the House following several progressive victories in primaries.

Responding to a direct question from host Kristen Welker, Jeffries stated he does not personally support Medicare for All. He mentioned not co-sponsoring the Medicare for All legislation in recent years. Jeffries believes in fixing the damaged healthcare system and improving it to make healthcare affordable for all Americans.

As the Democratic leader in the House, I do not support the legislation, but I am committed to finding a way to repair and better our healthcare system.

Jeffries had previously co-sponsored the Medicare for All Act of 2019 and the 2021 version. However, he was not a co-sponsor when representatives introduced the 2025 version, H.R. 3069. In the past, the NYC DSA Healthcare Working Group acknowledged their efforts in gaining Jeffries’ support for the 2019 legislation but noted his simultaneous support for Medicare X, a public-option bill.

The DSA’s latest initiative, ‘Workers Deserve More!,’ includes demands for universal healthcare at no cost, abolishing ICE, altering government structures, and changing funding for law enforcement as steps towards eliminating police and prisons completely.

When questioned about the place of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party, Jeffries distanced himself from the DSA’s platform. He acknowledged, however, that winning Democratic caucus members could include a variety of viewpoints, including progressive and centrist stances.

Notably, seven incumbent House Democrats, including Jeffries-backed candidates Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat, lost primaries to DSA-affiliated candidates such as Brad Lander and Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York.

California Representative Ro Khanna diverged from Jeffries’ stance on ‘Meet the Press,’ describing Medicare for All as a critical priority if Democrats regain control of the House. He presented a Yale analysis indicating potential national health expenditure reductions with a single-payer system.

Khanna’s position highlights differing views within the party, with former host Mehdi Hasan criticizing Jeffries for not aligning with the majority of Democrats nationwide who support Medicare for All.

Fox News did not receive an immediate response from the DSA regarding these issues. The article’s author, CJ Womack, also serves as an associate editor with a background in political science and journalism from Long Beach State University.
