An investigation began Thursday following a deputy-involved shooting in Chino Hills. A suspect in a kidnapping shot a victim in the trunk of a car during a traffic stop on Wednesday night. Deputies then returned fire, according to authorities.

Deputies arrived at the scene after receiving reports of gunshots and cries for help. They stopped the vehicle without knowing it was tied to a kidnapping. Both the driver and the victim lost their lives at the scene, while another suspect surrendered. Investigators are still exploring the suspects’ connection to the victim and the motives behind the attack.

Officials stated that the suspect initially shot the victim before placing them in the car trunk. During the traffic stop by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect shot the victim again. At that moment, deputies responded by shooting the suspect.

The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. on the 2000 block of Monteverde Drive after reports of gunshots and calls for help were received. Public information officer Gloria Orejel revealed that the victim was shot by two kidnappers outside their home and then put into the trunk.

Deputies spotted the suspect’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, unaware of the kidnapping situation. The deputies instructed the passengers to exit the vehicle. “The passenger complied,” Orejel said. “However, the driver approached the trunk and shot the victim inside.” Deputies responded by shooting the driver. Both the driver and the victim in the trunk were declared dead at the scene.
