A recent study published in the journal npj Aging suggests that reducing sugar intake during the first 1,000 days after conception may significantly lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life. The research indicates that individuals exposed to sugar restriction from pregnancy until about age 2 had a 46% lower chance of developing Alzheimer’s compared to those without such restrictions. The study also shows reduced risks of dementia, anxiety, and depression in later years.
Historical Context: Wartime Sugar Rationing
The study takes advantage of historical circumstances during World War II, when sugar was heavily rationed in the United Kingdom. Children under 2 years old did not receive sugar rations, and adult sugar consumption surged after rationing ended in 1953. This period offered a natural experiment to compare those exposed to low sugar levels early in life with those who were not.
Researchers in China reviewed health records of over 60,000 individuals born between 1951 and 1956. These participants were grouped based on whether sugar rationing affected them during the womb, early childhood, or neither, with the latter serving as a control group. Health changes over time were tracked through UK Biobank data.
Key Findings
The study found that those who experienced sugar restriction in their first 1,000 days post-conception had a 27% lower risk of dementia. Their risks of anxiety and depression decreased by 20% and 11%, respectively. There was no observed link between early-life sugar restriction and Parkinson’s disease risk.
- MRI scans of 9,053 participants indicated that participants with reduced sugar exposure had brains appearing on average 0.39 years younger than expected.

“These quasi-experimental findings suggest that early-life sugar restriction is associated with attenuated neurobiological aging and lower risks of dementia and psychiatric disorders,” the researchers stated.
Expert Insights and Study Limitations
Professor Fahad Hanna from Torrens University Australia explains that the findings align with the understanding of how early-life factors can impact long-term health. He highlights the critical first 1,000 days of brain development and the role of nutrition in this period. Excessive sugar consumption early in life may lead to metabolic and inflammatory issues known to increase cognitive decline risks.
However, Hanna cautions against viewing early-life nutrition as the sole factor in brain health, stressing the complexity of Alzheimer’s disease. “It’s influenced by genetics, cardiovascular health, education, lifestyle, and multiple environmental factors accumulated over a lifetime,” said Hanna.
While the study associates early sugar restriction with reduced dementia risk, it does not prove causality. Hanna emphasized the necessity to consider other factors such as socioeconomic status, health consciousness, healthcare access, education, and overall dietary patterns that might have varied among individuals.
The study authors reinforce the need for replication in modern settings before influencing clinical or public health guidelines. Despite the promising findings, both Hanna and the authors urge against drawing firm conclusions regarding Alzheimer’s prevention based on this study alone.
Nonetheless, the study supports existing public health advice to limit added sugar intake during pregnancy and early childhood, emphasizing the importance of the first 1,000 days in determining lifelong health outcomes.
