The husband of Elizabeth Waddell, a woman from North Carolina who vanished while on vacation in Grenada, stated his belief that “there was no foul play” in her disappearance. This was communicated by Cailen Waddell, her husband, on Wednesday. He noted the ongoing investigation aims to trace her movements before she went missing, underlining that “no detail is too small.”
Elizabeth Waddell was last captured on security footage around noon on July 22, swimming off Grand Anse Beach. Eyewitnesses reportedly interacted with her at approximately 5:30 p.m. further from the shore, Cailen Waddell shared.
“After careful and thoughtful consultation with family, local authorities, the U.S. Embassy, and others here in Grenada, I join authorities in believing there was no foul play,” he stated. “Liz was last seen swimming in the ocean near Grand Anse around 5:30 p.m., far from shore. She expressed confidence in her swimming and location, in addition to the island’s beauty.”
The 44-year-old mother was on a three-week vacation with her friend, Heather, at the time. When Elizabeth did not return to the Airbnb they were sharing, Heather discovered her towel but found no other trace of her.
A friend, Amanda Romano-Harmon, mentioned this week that the last known surveillance footage showed Elizabeth “floating” and “swimming around.” After floating out of the camera’s view, that footage was the last sighting of her.
Additional surveillance captured Elizabeth walking toward a beachside pier at 11:30 a.m. before she began swimming under the pier shortly after noon. Her friend Heather was seen heading toward the pier 45 minutes later but returned alone, according to Acting Police Commissioner Randy Connaught.
Cailen Waddell described his wife as “a loving free-spirit person,” telling Grenadian media she “could make friends with anyone,” a trait she often displayed. Authorities have requested anyone with information on Elizabeth Waddell’s whereabouts to contact them immediately. The U.S. State Department is aware of the situation.
