Democracy Dies in Darkness
Many homeowners with low-interest mortgages are opting to pay off their loans more quickly than required, despite financial advice suggesting otherwise. Financial planner Christopher Price notes, “Financially speaking, if I have a 2.5 percent mortgage, I would rather pay them as slowly and as long as I can.” This sentiment underscores a strategic approach to managing low-interest debt.
Interestingly, recent findings from Rocket Mortgage highlight that nearly one out of every four homeowners accelerates mortgage payments. The analysis covered early payments on about 3 million loans across all 50 states over the past five years. This behavior contrasts with the typical financial advantage derived from extending payments on low-interest loans.
Those who stand to benefit the most from maintaining low payments are often the ones not following this strategy. This trend raises questions about financial decision-making and the perceived benefits of rapid mortgage repayment despite minimal rates.
