September 27, 1993: Chicago White Sox Clinch Division Title
The Chicago White Sox secured their first American League West title in a decade with a 4-2 victory against the Seattle Mariners. Over 42,000 fans witnessed the event at Comiskey Park. Wilson Alvarez, a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher, delivered impressive performance. Bo Jackson contributed with a notable three-run home run, cementing the win. Unfortunately, the team later fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series with a 4-2 series loss.
September 27, 1970: Chicago Bears’ Home Opener
The Chicago Bears secured a win over the Philadelphia Eagles with a score of 20-16 at Northwestern University’s Dyche Stadium. Despite the win, the team faced criticism for numerous penalties and errors during the game. Local residents were not pleased with the idea of the Bears moving to Evanston, leading to a city petition against it. Although the Bears signed a five-year deal in 1971, the Big Ten Conference later prohibited the lease of Dyche Stadium.
September 27, 1974: Chagall’s “The Four Seasons” Dedicated
Marc Chagall’s expansive mosaic, “The Four Seasons,” found its home at the First National Bank’s outdoor plaza (now Chase Tower Plaza). The artist, at 87, expressed satisfaction with the piece, hoping for public appreciation. Dedicated in 1977, Chagall’s “America Windows” at the Art Institute of Chicago serve as a tribute to Mayor Richard J. Daley.
September 27, 1995: Cabrini-Green High-rise Demolition Begins
Tear-down operations commenced for the first of Cabrini-Green’s high-rise buildings, a significant transition for the area.
September 27, 2021: R. Kelly Convicted
R&B singer R. Kelly faced conviction in New York for sex-trafficking charges. Long evading legal consequences, he encountered extensive allegations involving young women and minors. Kelly is currently serving a 20-year sentence alongside an additional 30-year sentence for racketeering charges imposed in 2022.
September 27, 2024: Chicago White Sox Set Unwanted Record
The Chicago White Sox reached a dubious milestone with their 121st loss of the season, falling to the Detroit Tigers. The game attracted a sellout crowd of 44,435 at Comerica Park. The 2024 season was marked by consistent losses, firmly placing the team at the lower end of the league.
