Heavy rains struck New Jersey on Monday, causing a partial collapse of a roof at a big box store. This incident temporarily trapped two people inside, according to authorities. Ocean Township police, Monmouth Court Sheriff’s deputies, and other first responders arrived at BJ’s Wholesale Club around 11:16 a.m., the sheriff’s office reported.

There were 27 individuals inside the store at the time of the ceiling collapse. Two of them were partially trapped but managed to free themselves and exit the building safely, the sheriff added.

“This incident is another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions,” said Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden.

He praised the first responders for their swift action under challenging conditions. Despite the continuous flooding and severe weather affecting the communities, they worked together to ensure everyone’s safety. “Their dedication and teamwork exemplify the very best of public safety,” Golden stated.

No injuries were immediately reported. By early Monday afternoon, more than 2 inches of rain had fallen in South Jersey, located about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
