Harrison Butker Shines with a Record Attempt During NFL Preseason Game

Harrison Butker showcased his skills in an NFL preseason game when the Kansas City Chiefs faced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The standout moment occurred when Butker attempted a 69-yard field goal just before halftime. Despite the distance, he successfully kicked the ball through the uprights, giving the Chiefs a 9-0 lead heading into the locker room. Analysts believe the kick might have been successful from over 70 yards.

During the first half at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, on August 22, 2026, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes joined teammates in celebrating Butker’s remarkable achievement. Although it’s the preseason, if the kick were made during the regular season, it would have surpassed the NFL record for longest field goal. Currently, the record belongs to Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little, who made a 68-yard field goal against the Las Vegas Raiders last November.

Butker also holds the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history. In Super Bowl LVIII, he made a 57-yard field goal against the San Francisco 49ers, breaking the previous record set by 49ers kicker Jake Moody in the same game.

Despite the impressive distance, Butker faced challenges as the Chiefs narrowly lost to the Buccaneers 16-15. He missed an extra point and a crucial 43-yard attempt that could have won the game. Reflecting on his performance, Butker expressed dissatisfaction, emphasizing the importance of consistency in making critical kicks. He remarked, “You’ve got to make your kicks. Miss an extra point, miss a game-winner. That’s what I care about, not the 69-yarder or whatever it was.”

Butker admitted to struggling after making significant kicks, stating, “I feel like throughout my career when I’ve had big kicks, it’s been a struggle to finish the game or the next game. I feel like mentally I was good on that 43-yarder. It felt good off my foot. Maybe I need some more caffeine for the second half or something.” A penalty negated Butker’s first extra-point attempt after the Chiefs scored a touchdown, and his re-try hit the upright.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid commented on Butker’s overall performance: “Butker, until the last field goal, had a heck of a day. But he’ll be the first to tell you that’s the one he’ll remember. He’ll learn from it and move on. He’s made enough of those big ones for us that we know what he can do.”

Looking ahead, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to play their final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday night.
