Former Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the possibility of a 2028 presidential run during a conversation with NAACP leaders in Detroit on Tuesday. Her comments suggest that her future political ambitions will depend on immediate political engagement. She emphasized the importance of the 2026 midterm elections by stating that ’28 won’t matter if we don’t get through ’26.’
During the event, Harris was asked directly about her intentions for 2028 and whether she planned to run for president again. She noted, ‘I have not decided if I’m going to run again,’ while redirecting the discussion towards the midterm elections. She expressed her belief in the importance of focusing on current political challenges, suggesting that overlooking the immediate future could lead to missteps.
The discussion took place during Harris’ second event of the day in Detroit. It was moderated by Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit Branch NAACP, and Rev. Dr. Genetta Y. Hatcher, pastor of The Room Church. Before addressing the 2028 election, Anthony urged attendees to participate in voting, highlighting the significance of early and mail-in voting. Harris was presented with ‘take your souls to the polls’ merchandise during the event.
Earlier in the day, Harris campaigned with Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed at a roundtable that focused on Black maternal health and healthcare expenses. She criticized former President Donald Trump’s healthcare policies and expressed support for El-Sayed’s campaign.
Harris’ recent remarks underscore her focus on the 2026 midterms, while she keeps the option for another presidential bid open. After becoming the Democratic nominee in 2024, she lost the presidential election to Trump following then-President Joe Biden’s decision to end his re-election campaign.
