The New York Giants are facing quarterback challenges following Jaxson Dart’s knee surgery, which has sidelined him for the regular season. The team may need to add one or even two quarterbacks in response.
Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston started for the Giants on Sunday, leading them to a 12-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans at MetLife Stadium. Despite wet conditions, Winston managed to complete 14 of 22 passes for 118 yards and contributed 14 yards rushing. While his performance wasn’t stellar, it was sufficient to defeat a Titans team now at 0-3 under new head coach Robert Saleh.
In a postgame news conference, Giants head coach John Harbaugh expressed intent to retain Winston as the starting quarterback, regardless of potential acquisitions. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Harbaugh commended Winston for fulfilling the team’s needs against the Titans.
“Not at all,” Harbaugh said. “The plans are the plans. The opportunities that you have are the opportunities you have. No matter what, we’re going to do everything we can to make our team as strong as we can based on what options we have.”
At 32, Winston’s stats in terms of passing yards and touchdowns haven’t impressed, yet the Giants remain steadfast in their plans and intentions. Despite Winston’s struggles, dating back to his selection as the top pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, the team expects him to adapt to future opportunities.
The Giants are hopeful for Dart’s return in January if a deep playoff push materializes. Presently, the focus is on winning games to secure a postseason spot. With a 2-1 record, the team is set to face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4. Winston’s inconsistency raises concerns for the Giants’ playoff aspirations.
Winston’s previous performance against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2—where he threw for 111 yards with an interception on “Monday Night Football”—did not inspire confidence. New York aimed for improved play from Winston with a tailored strategy against the Titans, yet the game did not meet these expectations.
