Gavin Newsom Discusses Potential 2028 Presidential Bid

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently stated he will not pursue a presidential run in 2028 if former Vice President Kamala Harris decides to enter the race. In a conversation with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Newsom expressed his support for Harris, saying he would not challenge her candidacy.

Newsom and Tapper were engaged in a fly-fishing session in Montana when the topic arose. Tapper expressed surprise at Newsom’s decision, given that Harris has attempted presidential bids twice before. Newsom acknowledged the valid points in Tapper’s counterargument but maintained that he would not compete against Harris due to overlapping political support and personal connections.

“I wouldn’t do that to her … I wouldn’t do that to you. I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time,” Newsom stated.

Despite Newsom’s decision, there is speculation around potential candidates for the 2028 election. Both Harris and Newsom have been identified as likely contenders. According to RealClearPolitics polling data, Harris currently leads Newsom and other Democratic hopefuls.

Another aspect of the political landscape includes betting odds, where Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez currently holds a slight edge over other potential candidates, including Jon Ossoff, with Newsom and Harris further behind.

Governor Newsom has consistently been considered a strong candidate for future presidential runs. However, the current political dynamics and loyalty towards Harris shape his standpoint on the 2028 election.
