French Investigation Into Activists’ Allegations of Mistreatment in Israel

French prosecutors have initiated a preliminary inquiry into the alleged mistreatment of French activists by Israeli authorities. These activists, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, were intercepted while attempting to reach the Gaza Strip.

The flotilla aimed to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. Activists intended to deliver aid to the enclave, which is experiencing a humanitarian crisis. Their attempts gained momentum following Israel’s increased restrictions during the war.

After interception, French prosecutors from the antiterrorism office announced their intention to investigate claims of torture and war crimes. The scrutiny intensified after a video featuring Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, gained attention. The footage depicted him taunting detained activists, who were restrained on a ship’s deck.

Israel has denied allegations of abuse. The activists were eventually released and deported to Turkey. Yet, this incident has sparked diplomatic tensions as Israel faces growing isolation, particularly among European allies, due to the ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
