Former German intelligence leader August Hanning, aged 80, was arrested for alleged espionage and attempted treason. He is accused of acquiring classified documents and using secret information for analysis for a foreign intelligence service employee. Hanning, who directed Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, is now facing severe allegations from federal prosecutors.
Prosecutors state that Hanning is under suspicion for treasonous espionage and attempting to commit treason. An aide, identified as Manfred D., has also been detained in western Germany. Manfred D. is accused of aiding and abetting in the treasonous activities linked to the case.
August Hanning, the former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, was arrested on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason, according to federal prosecutors.
Manfred D. served as Hanning’s chief of staff and later continued in that role for Hanning’s BND successors from 2012 to 2026. Prosecutors allege that beginning in 2010, an agreement was in place for Manfred D. to deliver intelligence to Hanning in return for payment. This arrangement purportedly lasted until June 2022, with Manfred D. supplying about 2,000 documents to Hanning; many contained confidential material intended strictly for internal use.
Allegations indicate Hanning exploited this information in his consulting business. The federal prosecutor’s office revealed to German broadcaster RTL that Hanning utilized classified data to craft analysis for a foreign intelligence service employee. He supposedly shared information following dialogues with another intelligence service representative. The authorities have not specified which foreign intelligence services were involved.
The investigation begins from an unconnected case, specifically the 2024 abduction of Hamburg businesswoman Christina Block’s children amid a custody conflict. The evidence from this investigation led to Hanning’s arrest.
Hanning’s arrest is notable as he is the first former head of Germany’s foreign intelligence service to be detained, as reported by Reuters. Both Hanning and Manfred D. are scheduled to appear before a judge at Germany’s Federal Court of Justice. Fox News Digital sought comments from GLOBSEC, due to Hanning’s prior connection, regarding the arrest and allegations.
