Florida Driver Fleeing Traffic Stop Crashes Into School Bus

A dramatic incident occurred in Florida when a driver allegedly fleeing a traffic stop collided head-on with a school bus carrying 19 children. The suspect abandoned his vehicle and attempted to escape on foot after the crash.

The incident took place Tuesday morning and was captured on video. Footage showed the suspect’s vehicle crashing into a Sumter County school bus. Police body camera footage also recorded a deputy chasing and arresting the suspect. Thankfully, all children on the bus were unharmed, as reported by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect, identified as Qahiem Williams, 23, faces multiple charges after allegedly fleeing the traffic stop and crashing into the school bus.

The events unfolded around 7:20 a.m. when a deputy assigned to school-zone traffic enforcement observed Williams driving 17 mph above the speed limit near Tatonka Terrace. The deputy attempted a traffic stop by activating emergency lights, but Williams accelerated, sideswiping two vehicles at a traffic light.

The collisions damaged Williams’ vehicle axle, leading to the head-on crash with the school bus on County Road 103. Video from inside the bus captured the moment just before impact, showing the driver’s side door of Williams’ vehicle open.

Williams exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Body camera footage captured a deputy pursuing him before apprehending Williams near a Walmart.

Once in custody, Williams faced several charges including fleeing or eluding, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, hit-and-run, and a traffic violation.

Authorities revealed Williams had two outstanding warrants for fleeing or eluding and driving with a suspended license. Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden condemned Williams’ actions, emphasizing the risk posed to children’s safety.

“I have zero tolerance when it comes to actions that put our children’s lives in danger,” Sheriff Breeden said. “This suspect has a history of this type of behavior and our community is safer with him off our streets.”

Williams was medically cleared and transported to Sumter County Detention Center where he was held without bond.
