Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia have emerged as the three finalists to host the Democratic National Convention in 2028. This announcement comes from Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin. The decision-making process will now advance to the Democratic National Convention Committee, which will take several months to determine the final choice.
Earlier considerations included Atlanta and Chicago, but these cities did not make it to the final round. The Associated Press initially reported on the finalists.
The 2028 Democratic National Convention will serve as a significant celebration for the party’s upcoming nominee and mark an essential step in the Democrats’ journey to regain the White House,” Martin expressed in a statement. “Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia have all submitted compelling proposals, and the DNC will continue its collaboration with these cities to make the final choice.
The DNC began requesting proposals from cities interested in hosting the convention in September 2025. Site visits took place in April and May to evaluate potential venues.
Atlanta’s absence from the shortlist drew criticism from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. In a letter seen by CBS News, Dickens expressed disappointment, indicating that the DNC does not seem to consider Atlanta or Georgia crucial to the party’s history or future.
The convention is set to occur from August 7 to 10, 2028. Chicago hosted the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Philadelphia last hosted the DNC in 2016, when Hillary Clinton was declared the party’s presidential nominee. Boston served as the host city in 2004, the year Barack Obama delivered his memorable keynote address. Denver hosted in 2008, the year Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president.
