FBI Captures Medicare Fraud Fugitive
Herbert Leon Kimble, 60, has been apprehended in the Philippines and returned to the United States. Kimble is accused of a massive Medicare fraud conspiracy amounting to $1.2 billion. Prosecutors allege that his scheme affected thousands of beneficiaries, focusing primarily on the elderly.
Kimble allegedly ran the operation through call centers, guiding patients toward unnecessary orthopedic braces. In 2019, he pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges including conspiracy, healthcare fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, false claims, and offering kickbacks and bribes.
“Herbert Leon Kimble preyed on the elderly for years, costing taxpayers over a billion dollars,” Vice President J.D. Vance stated.
Most Wanted Fraudsters List
Kash Patel, the FBI Director, highlighted the agency’s commitment to eliminating fraud and protecting taxpayers. The arrest is linked to the Justice Department’s recent creation of the “Most Wanted Fraudsters” list. This initiative publicly identifies suspects charged in major fraud cases, accelerating their capture.
The list facilitates law enforcement’s pursuit of fugitives involved in large-scale fraud. Only two weeks prior, Said Abdullahi Ereg was arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and money laundering, marking the first arrest from this list.
Task Force to Eliminate Fraud
The crackdown is bolstered by Trump’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, led by Vice President Vance. Vance credited the Most Wanted Fraudsters list and cooperation with the Philippine government for Kimble’s capture.
“Our message is clear,” Vance noted. “Those who defraud the American people will face justice.”
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche reaffirmed, “Fleeing the United States does not mean you can flee justice.”
Kimble evaded authorities for nearly two years. His arrest follows the unveiling of the National Fraud Enforcement Division, aiming to recover fraudulent spending in programs like Medicare and Medicaid.
International Manhunt
Kimble failed to appear for his sentencing hearing in August 2024, triggering a federal warrant and international search. The swift action by the FBI and the task force demonstrates commitment to reducing fraudulent activities and ensuring accountability.
