An altercation at Vouliagmeni Beach in Greece resulted in the death of an 82-year-old man. The incident began on the morning of September 20 when the elderly man attempted to reserve a lounge chair for his group. A 76-year-old man also claimed the chairs, leading to a heated argument.
Witnesses reported that shouting could be heard across the beach. During the confrontation, the 82-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the sand. He was taken to a local hospital but died shortly after arrival.
The 76-year-old was arrested and charged with causing fatal bodily harm. A 21-year-old woman accompanying him also faced charges of verbal abuse and aiding the harm. She was later released, despite suffering injuries during the incident.
The conflict involved six sunbeds. The younger man and the woman had purchased tickets for two of them. However, the older man claimed the area for his friends. This dispute escalated after the 82-year-old allegedly hit the young woman, prompting others to respond.
A nurse at the scene attempted CPR and used a defibrillator, but the victim was pronounced dead shortly after 11 a.m. A postmortem will determine the cause of death.
Vouliagmeni Beach, near Athens, can attract 7,000 to 8,000 people a day, leading to increased tensions over space. The wider backdrop includes national efforts to control beach access across Greece. Earlier this year, the government began enforcing regulations against private businesses using public beaches illegally. Tactics include using drones and a citizen complaint app to limit unauthorized use of sunbeds.
The 76-year-old and the woman are due to testify in court. A manager from the beach resort was also questioned by police about the incident.
